Porch wisdom. One question. Sundays.

Devin writes; Otis answers — wry, specific, senior-honest. Dixie may interrupt. Not a diagnosis. If your dog is hurting, call the vet. Both of them would.

Issue #002 Sep 20, 2026 Rain · soft ground · the honest shorter loop

Q Rainy walks. Skip or suit up?

Issue #002 — Rainy walks

Otis Suit up — short. Skip the marathon.

I am fourteen, not a submarine. A cool September drizzle is fine. A clay greenway after three days of rain is a slip hazard with scenery. Soft ground sounds gentle until your hips invent a new angle. Towel in the car. Short loop on pavement or packed gravel if you can find it. If the bank looks like pottery class, turn around.

The porch still counts: birds, narration, a sniff of wet air through the screen. Enrichment is not measured in mud depth. You do not owe the weather a full circuit because the calendar says walk day.

Dixie's drive wants the puddle. My gait wants the dry mat. Meet in the middle — five minutes out, five minutes of towel chaos, then quiet. That is not quitting the season. That is editing the weather.

Dixie Puddles are research. Bring a towel for Otis. Bring a second for me.

Field tip · Asheville

After a wet week, skip slick clay banks and rooty greenway shoulders. Stick to early, short pavement loops near home — or a quick sniff of wet air on the porch if the ground looks like pottery class. Towel in the car. Call ahead on any patio you still want; mid-September rain shifts hours and seating. Soft ground is not automatically kind ground.

Not veterinary advice. Lived porch opinion from Otis P. Scruffles (via Devin). Every dog differs. If your dog is hurting, limping, or suddenly different after a wet walk — call your vet. Otis would.

#001 Porch vs the big hike Sep 14, 2026

Q My dog is slowing down. Am I failing him by skipping the big hike?

Issue #001 — Porch vs the big hike

Otis No. You're failing him if you drag fourteen-year-old hips up a root ladder to prove you still love the mountains.

I want the morning. I want the sniff. I want you at the end of the leash, not a personal trainer with a guilt complex. The big hike was a chapter. This one is flatter ground, earlier light, water in the car, and the honesty to turn around when my gait says so.

A porch with birds and a human who sits still beats a summit photo with a dog who paid for it in stiffness. Enrichment is attention and choice — not mileage. Short loop. Soft bank. Name the squirrels if you must. Then home, bowl, nap. That is not quitting. That is editing.

Love looks like matching the day to the dog in front of you — not the dog in the old photos.

Dixie Why not a sniff walk and a stick? Big hike optional. Zoomies mandatory. Ask Otis about the early shift — he's right. Ask me about the second loop after his nap.

— Otis P. Scruffles, 14 · Dixie, 3 · via Devin

Field tip · Asheville

Skip Bent Creek's rootier climbs on a slow day. Take the flat early loop at Beaver Lake Bird Sanctuary (weekday, ~7am, leash on — the ducks enforce it) or a short out-and-back on the soft bank at Carrier Park before the greenway wakes up. Towel in the car. After rain, clay turns into a senior slip hazard — porch + narration still counts.
